Hello, I have a problem with ephedrine chloride. No matter how much sodium hydroxide I add to it, it does not turn into a free base. The pH is 14, but the free base is not. Can anyone help?

You sure chief? Ephedrine still a crystal solid as a freebase, so it's not like meth which is an oil

Can you be more specific? Are you saying that the free base of ephedrine is not in the form of oil in water?

Dissolve your ephedrine in water. Next make %20 NaOH solution in water. 1 gram NaOH to 4ml H2O. Add this slowly and mix and wait after each addition until pH 12-13 and wait. If it is good ephedrine it should float to the top as an oil. This is your freebase ephedrine. You can collect it with a hydrocarbon solvent like ether or naptha. Something that wont mix with water. Pay attention to which phase is the organic layer, it should be the top one. Save the water layer just in case there was a mistake and maybe you can go back and save the product. If you add too much NaOH, you are possibly burning it with base, and destroying it and nothing will happen.

But to continue, extract it 2/3 times with small portions of hydrocarbon. Then depending on what you plan to do next you will want to salt it out or dry it.. but we can't do it all for you... if you wanna cook you gotta be able to figure out these little things.
