Given the inherent drawbacks of utilizing LAH to reduce the formamide to the secondary amine, have you considered substituting it with the more accessible reagents Borane (I2 + NaBH4), SMAB (Sodium Monoacetoxyborohydride), or STAB in THF?
And, of course, CoCl2 + NaBH4
